Beatles, Brand New and the best of the 90's

By Chris Beeman

The first Beatles album I ever listened to was an old one of my mom's, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I would lay on the floor in my room and listen to it over and over. By the time I started getting interested in music my parents were listening to Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson so this was something entirely different. "Fixing a Hole" and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" blew me away, I had no idea what any of it meant but I loved it. I know some believe the Beatles can be overhyped and I have sometimes gone years in between listening to them, but you know what, they deserve every bit of hype they have ever gotten. If you are not a Beatles fan do yourself a favor and download Revolver. If you go in with an open mind, I'm sure you will be hooked.

Since not every band can be The Beatles, let's talk about Brand New. They are an Emo/Punk/Boy band or as a friend of mine calls it "angry white boy music." If you are looking for angry white boy music, I definitely suggest Brand New. Not every song is great but they have a lot of energy and are fun to listen to and unlike some Emo, you don't get the sense they are screaming just to see how loud their voice can go.

Finally, two bands that dominated a large portion of my 90's music listening—Big Head Todd and the Monsters and Built to Spill. I have seen Big Head Todd in concert half a dozen times as they are a great, great live band. They sound a little dated these days but it's a good choice if you're looking for something a little lighter without going into Barry Manilow territory. If you enjoy Blues Traveler or Dave Mathews Band, check out Big Head Todd and the Monsters. I have been listening to Built to Spill for almost 15 years and they never get old. Doug Martsch, the founder of this famous indie band from Boise, brings powerful, amazing guitar work and great lyrics to keep anyone hooked for 15 years.
