k, I'm a metal head. That being said, of all the subgenres of metal, death metal does not top my list of favorites. You've got to give Cannibal Corpse credit for sticking by their guns all these years though, I mean, how long and how many ways can you write about mutilation and dismemberment before it loses its impact? Apparently 20 years (and counting!) I know the phrase "there's no such thing as bad publicity" has a lot of merit but I have to wonder how getting your album banned or being banned from performing someplace can really do a lot for your career. In 1995, Senator Bob Dole accused Cannibal Corpse of undermining the national character of the United States. Ok, I actually think that's kind of cool... and let's face it, a cameo in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective doesn't exactly hurt either.
Some, ok, a lot of their music is just a bunch of heavy riffs sped up and pieced together with some cookie monster vocals layered on top. However, as any metal fan will tell you, whether you love them or hate them you can't deny that "Hammer Smashed Face" is one of the most brutal metal songs ever written and to that, Cannibal Corpse, I salute you. \m/
