D is for The Decemberists

By Sarah

I loooooove this band. And not just because I'm a total Portland Bands Snob. Which I am, but that's not the point. I began listening in 2002 and haven't stopped since. They made the jump to major label a few years back and while I love to see their success, their earlier work remains my favorite. "Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect" from 2003's Castaways and Cutouts will always hold a special place in my heart.

Most of the time, I feel like I need both a dictionary and an encyclopedia when I listen to The Decemberists. And I'm pretty sure I'm never dressed old-timey enough either. And I probably should be twirling a parasol while pining after my One True Love who just went off to battle armed with only a knapsack and some sort of musket. Anyway.

The Decemberists are not for everyone. It seems that most people tend to either love or hate their music; I haven't found to many people in the gray area, except for one: yesterday my friend told me that he finds The Decemberists exceptionally annoying, yet has been to 5 of their shows. I'm not surprised. They put on an amazing live show. And I admit, I almost never can listen to more than a few songs in a row...the conceptual storytelling approach of the majority their albums can be overwhelming.

But check them out. You'll suddenly find yourself wanting to don a petticoat and start your sentences with "O!"
