Edges

Pasek and Paul
By Jeremiah Ginn

So, I only have one "E" Album this week, and that is of a song cycle entitled Edges. This show was written by two up and coming musical theater writers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. They are both in their early twenties, and met each other while studying musical theater at the University of Michigan. Edges is a great collection of wonderful songs that are definitely worth listening to.

The style of their music has a very contemporary pop/musical theater feel to it. The show of course focuses on young single adults, their lives, their loves, their passions, etc. There is everything in here from heart wrenching ballads about losing a father, thought provoking songs about finding out who you are and what you want to become in this world, to even a song about Facebook.

I could try to single out some of my favorite music, but honestly, I love ALL the songs in the show. There is not one song that is not worth knowing. And I particularly love this style of music in the musical theater genre. I love to perform it, to play it on the piano, and hear it sung by great singers who can tell stories. And that is what I think I love most about Edges: it tells the stories of our lives.
