Formatting Frou Frou and Franz Faintly

By Alisha Stamper

Drop what you are doing and go buy albums if you are not familiar with these bands as they are all MUST HAVE for any collection that belongs to someone with a brain*:

The Faint — Perfect work out music, on the way to the club music, driving at night because 1. angry, 2. tired, 3. need a pick up. Killer tempos and balances of rhythm.

Franz Ferdinand — Ultimate desire without achievement. Doesn't get the girl in most songs, and frankly, is a moron (in terms of the personified singer's romantic/lustful quests). The music alone is worth it, but this is especially good if you are hating on a man (and it isn't angry girl music, since the singer is a guy. Break out of THAT genre). "40'" was my ringtone for the first two years of my marriage. It drove my husband nuts (it was my morning alarm), but I woke up happy every morning because that was the first song I heard every day.

The Format — Clean voice, slightly formulaic, but nice. Universally liked, good company music.

Frou Frou — Initially just a side project, the only album, Details, is impeccable. My love for Imogen Heap (check out her solo stuff) is ranked with Bjork and Tori Amos. Piercingly beautiful voice, like a breath of fresh air. Can't tear your ears away from listening to her. I promise. You'll feel your heartbeat lighten and relax as you settle into the beauty it creates.

* The great thing about this is you don't even have to be smart to appreciate this music (which is most assuredly proved in my case). It is so good it crosses boundaries for everyone and deserves a permanent place in your collection.
