k:karate

By Pat Gamble

Karate is a jazzy indie rock band, not an indie rock band that plays jazz. This is an important distinction because even though they combine jazz guitar chords and leads with splashy quick drums and walking bass lines, they do not play jazz; they play indie rock.

Lately, I've been rewiring the stereo at the bar I work at so I can listen to my iPod. There are 6 Karate songs in the playlist I've been listening to for the past few weeks. Everytime one comes on I look around and smile because half the bar is nodding their heads and tapping on the table. It's really too bad these guys are from Boston. We don't get to see them much out here in Portland (I'm not even sure if they are still playing together). I've seen them twice here in the last 7 years. If you ever get the chance you have to go see them play live to really appreciate how talented the lead singer is.

Karate is a three piece band: bass, drums and guitar. The singer Geoff Farina also plays all that sweet jazzy indie guitar. It's really impressive to see these three guys work together.

My top two albums suggestions from Karate are Some Boots and Pockets.
