Micachu & The Shapes

By gaiJen, stranger in a strange land

Micachu & The Shapes is for fans of the absurd. The textural clues of Jewellery suggest that Mica Levi is hawking music made through unusual circumstances fabricated from oddly shaped compositions and stitched together with homemade twine. The whole constructed piece is leftfield found-sound couture yet familiar, evoking memories of nonesense songs you used to make-up as a kid.

It may have started out as a dissertation for composition class, but Jewellery is full of deconstructed pop for the YouTube generation that eschews the verse-chorus-verse template. My two favorite songs are "Lips" and "Just in Case". "Lips" is more fun than eighty seconds has any right to be and "Just in Case" is improbably good (if an acquired taste). If you wake up one morning in a landscape of melting clocks with cockraoch mandibles where your mouth used to be, Micachu might just be the thing you need to get the day started.
